Road Rage Exposed: Suntec City Red Vespa Ang Moh Mark Franklin

Yet another road rage incident involving an Ang Moh motorist happened on the roads of Singapore! According to the Singaporean victim Tay, the arrogant motorist flashed his middle finger and hit his car just because Tay tapped his horn (once) when the motorcyclist did an illegal U-turn.

Is this the sort of thuggish behaviour we expect from our foreign talents? Regardless of one's wealth and standing, one is expected to abide by the laws of the land you are in. The motorist's total disregard for fellow motorists and his arrogance pissed off many Singaporeans. Many have since called for the authorities to take swift action against him.

Alas, no action was taken against this brazen motorist for his bad behaviour till today.

Because of the authorities's reticence in doing justice, The Unseen Singapore felt compelled to stand up for our fellow Singaporeans. Without further ado, we present to you, Mark Franklin, the Suntec City road rage motorist.

Based on the evidence given by Tay, the motorist speaks with a British accent and the incident happened at Suntec City.

After the incident, Singaporeans managed to track down the same Red Vespa FBE197R parked in the vicinity of Suntec City on at least two other occasions.

The video of the incident was then uploaded onto YouTube and a YouTube whistle blower by the name of Peter Lim exposed the motorist to be Mark Franklin, Managing Director of Piaggio Asia Pacific. Mark is obviously pretty "well-liked" to be outed like that on the internet.

With this tip, The Unseen Singapore dug deeper and found two compelling pieces of evidence to back up this claim.

First, Piaggio Asia Pacific's office is situated at Suntec City Tower Two and being the Managing Director, it would explain why Mark Franklin parks his Vespa in the Suntec area and drives a red hot Vespa (live product advertising).

Second, from Mark Franklin's Facebook, it is confirmed that he is British and this ties up with the victim's account of the motorist speaking with a British accent.

Are these facts purely coincidental or is Mark Franklin the bozo on that sexy red Vespa?

Will Mark Franklin be man enough to own up to his mistake and apologise to all Singaporeans for his thuggish arrogance?

Now that we (the People) have done the heavy lifting, will the authorities take action against this foreign talent or are they afraid of his wealth and influence?

Singaporeans welcome foreign talents to our little island but if you step on us, we will "hunt" you down and shame you :)

    3. "Think about it . The road is so wide , why must the driver horn."

Your logic is warped. It's NOT about whether the road is wide or not.

So if the road is 'wide enough', I can stand there and read a mag? Or play with my handphone? Or look at the sky for 30 mins, all the while asking the traffic to avoid me and divert away?

The fella stopped ABRUPTLY, causing the driver to e-brake, thereby endangering the driver as well as potentially causing accident with the on-coming traffic from behind.

And he still has the fucking cheeks to raise his middle finger? In a hosting country? As a managing director of an MNC?

WTF is on his, and your, mind?

  10. What has become of our peace loving and law-abiding society that we Singaporeans are being labeled as "scum of the earth" by a foreign PMET? He who has violated our space and peace and yet having the audacity to stick his middle finger right up our butts! Are we to be a disgrace to the world having descended deep down the abyss as seen by these foreigners? The likes of Anton Casey and Mark Franklin. Have we lowered our standing in the eyes of the world in submission to this kind of wanton abuse by a foreign aggressor only to have him getting away with impunity? Whereupon we the peasants has been chastised as "xenophobic"; "bigotry" and "a disgace to the nation" by our very own leaders when we spoke up! The colonial hangover that we so painstainkly shook off from the British rule for four decades only to be pervasively brought back on us again the last decade.

If I, as a white male from another country, was cut off by a "local" driver, then I tracked down their car, stalked them on facebook and re-published all of their details for public ridicule - I'd be the one everyone would be pointing the finger at.

Singaporeans need to stop handing out such obvious double standards.

A basic web search on the history of Singapore says that about 200 years ago the population of Singapore was roughly 5,000..

Therefore, they rightly deserved to be shamed. But honestly,if it was me, i would have stalked him and made him swallow his fingers when he is at a secluded area with no one looking. But not everyone is like me, and i understand their purpose in doing this rather than to beat the living shi* out of the guy

Already the local government sucks up to you and freely give you permanent residency, free uni education, cheap housing, cheap public transport, free local girls to suck your dicks. Is this not enough? Why do you still want to antagonize the locals by raging on the roads as well?
Talk about biting the hands that feed you. When you've got a good thing going, just chill out and reap the benefits, not risk losing the perks by being dickheads on the roads. No wonder the locals think foreigners are brainless.

The Real Singapore is seriously getting on my nerves. I happen to know the other side of the story, and I have a few points I wanna make, so hear me out.

Can I kindly request for “Victim” Tay to upload the raw video with FULL AUDIO so Singaporeans can make an impartial judgment of the whole incident?

Mr. Franklin was pulling over to the right as he suspected that there’s a problem with his scooter. Note: He did not stop to threaten said victim. “Victim” Tay then honked at him, not ONCE as claimed, but continuously for the ENTIRE duration of the video and after. This ‘victim’ also HAD HIS MIDDLE FINGER UP THE WHOLE TIME. This prompted Mr. Franklin to walk over to his car to find out what the problem was. I can only imagine how pissed Mr. Franklin must have been because as if getting stuck with a faulty scooter is not unfortunate enough, he now has to deal with a rude fellow road-user who chose to seek unnecessary trouble instead of just taking the left lane where there is ample space to pass. I’m not saying Mr. Franklin is completely right for showing the finger, but he definitely did not do it unprovoked. Next, MR. FRANKLIN DID NOT MAKE ANY DEROGATORY REMARKS DIRECTED AT SINGAPOREANS. “Victim” Tay can be taken to court for slander under the Defamation Act. After catching how he was “victimized” on video, “Victim” Tay then started gloating. He was smiling widely and singing “I got you on video, I got you on video” repeatedly, which brings me to my next point…

What is “Victim” Tay’s intention? Tay, why are you terrorizing foreigners like that? Now that you have gotten undiscerning Singaporeans to hate on foreigners (more), what else do you want? Playing victim and turning Singaporeans against foreigners like Mr. Franklin may be fun to you, but did it ever occur to you that you are ruining people’s lives?

I am absolutely disgusted at how this (severely misrepresented) incident is magnified just because the man in question is a foreigner. –Okay from this point onwards I am just ranting- The most common reaction from netizens goes along the lines of ‘he is a foreigner, how can he come to our land and do this to our people?’ Hello, NEWSFLASH: As much as they do not have the right to do anything marginally harmful to us locals, we do not REIGN OVER THEM. Stop treating them like they are less of a human and judge them based on a different set of standards. QUIT PICKING ON THEM JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN. QUIT THE DOUBLE STANDARDS.

I know Singaporeans’ aversion towards foreigners is not baseless, and I am also guilty of conveniently blaming them for the most random things, but seriously… stop thinking every Ang Moh is out to get you. Stop picking on foreigners. Stop being so xenophobic.

I know it is only natural to want to stand up for a fellow Singaporean, but I sincerely hope local netizens will stop taking sides blindly and start withholding judgment before getting substantiated versions of the stories they read online.

Lastly, TRS should stop calling itself ‘the voices of average Singaporeans’. Average Singaporeans are better than that. There is a thin line between uncensored journalism and total bullshit. TRS, stop threading on that line.

    3. TUS is just another STOMP like site riding on untruth stories from contributors. I totally support impartiality and non-judgemental view in this case. Only after thorough check would this half-baked truth hold good until then the bashing is unfounded. I totally support Mark in that he is not guilty until proven. What if Tay in turn showed his middle-finger or splurged profanity at Mark. Both of their actions would cancel out. But law needs to behold who is guilty.

Fanning xenophobia is too sicky and would do harm to any country.

NB: I am not supporting any chow angmoh but Mark is just equivalent to Tay until the truth is found out and known to all S'prns. My boss is British who I hate to the core for not his colour but as an individual's action and character.

  25. The "other side" of the story doesn't make sense leh

If you kena problem with your car or scooter, would you pull over to the RIGHT?

Also, when you watch the video, the ANG MOH IMMEDIATELY GIVE MIDDLE FINGER when he turn around. You telling me if scooter got problem, you still can immediately turn around and neh people without seeing what's going on meh?

If Ang Moh say he knows he kena film, why he never gesture in front of camera if Ah Tay say he is on video?

If Ang Moh say his scooter got problem, then why he walk back to scooter and RIDE OFF to make the u-turn?

Simple lah. The ang moh wanted shortcut to motorbike parking near his office and he kena caught by Ah Tay. Now he want to bullshit and say he was the victim here

  26. Cannot understand that the vidoe was edited to show only what the owner wants you to see and feel?

  27. Possible explanation, but in the absence of other evidence or witnesses, we can only reply on the video. 1. If there was a problem with the scooter, he would not have stopped on the right, he would have stopped on the left. If I had a problem, I would be slowing down on the left and stopping on the left. 2. The video showed that he stopped way before the car stopped and was quite far ahead. It looks like he was obviously going for the illegal short cut. 3. Having stopped and showed the middle finger, he moved forward again to park, which indicates there's nothing wrong with his scooter 4. It cannot be a coincidence that his scooter had a problem just at that little gap where he wanted to go in??? 5. If he really had a problem and he is so near Suntec, his office, would he not have gone all the way to his office before he checks on the scooter? I would. If I stop, it may not start again and I have a real problem. 6. If someone showed the middle finger at me and I punched him, I am in the wrong. From the video, it was obvious he walked towards the car. I am sure he wasn't asking for directions! He was possibly (I said possibly) the aggressor and the way he taps on the car (Body Language) showed it too (Hey, you don't touch a Chinese's car just like you don't touch a black man's radio... fm Rush Hour). 7. He moved of immediately after, which again showed that there's nothing wrong with his scooter. If he can move off, he can go to his office to check on his scooter. Having said the above, too bad, he's the one caught on video. I am not against foreigners and but I am against road rage regardless of who it is. The guy who posted the comment on the blog obviously do not know the driver, so he is possibly an employee or a friend of Mr Franklin listening to his side of the story??? The only suspicion here is that the audio was deleted. But even if the driver had sounded his horn continuously, he is not wrong (since when was sounding the horn wrong?). The scooter should never have stopped, blocking traffic on the fast lane (if I were the driver, I would not have expected it to stop and I may have to jam my brake to avoid him, adding to my frustration) on a busy road entering the CBD! You can actually see that he stopped quite far out the lane!

It is a very 'belittling' action - something one does, to people they (pardon me) look down upon. I will not elaborate further to worsen this situation. I do not believe Singaporeans have over-reacted in their comments regarding this unpleasant encounter. The driver could have come out of the car and return Mark's abusive reaction too and create a din, obstructing the road condition and endangering fellow motorists. The driver of the car didn't - who says Singaporeans have no grace? Just compare these 2 in the video. Yet many times, instances like these still happens to us in other minor ways but many have gone unreported, simply because they were just too insignificant. This yet, is again Grace - the unreported cases.

May accidentally done things wrong or throw temper beyond controlled, anyway he is here for a living... Just forgive and forget, hope he will learn a lesson after this... And also, hope Internet is a kind of tools for searching information, advertising, selling and most of all learning... It's not about us being biased but the angmo missed the point about having basic respect for others and being a courteous human being. His behaviour surely is frowned on even in his home country. It just so happens that this had been caught on video which is bad luck on Mark.

Honking is just as rude, if you decide to honk... or shoot the middle finger you should be prepared for whatever comes as they are both an invitation for an ass kicking.

Singaporeans need to grow up and quite hiding behind the skirts of their government and police. Until they grow up and decide to be adults like most the rest of the world instead of insolent children you will continue to have the scourge of FT that you dislike so much

  49. All these are symptoms of a deep resentment not towards foreigners but towards caucasians. We seem to always need their endorsement to make things seem "good and credible" such as CNA tends to pan camera shots of caucasian faces first then others in symposium, seminars or even interviews on the streets. Then SIA's advertisements speak very loudly. Condominium ads are weekly features and one property group's tv branding tagline goes something like "we don't just build buildings, we also build people" then showing a Caucasian baby being held up in the air! Why not a Malay, a Chinese, an Indian baby? I think all these point to our subservient colonial mentality. We have ourselves to blame!!!!!!

    2. How would blaming ourselves solve any problem? The colonial mentality has to be changed no doubt, and no one is contending that. It is slowly changing but it first has to start with the individual. Learn how to respect yourself and others more, whichever race or nationality we are.

It's not about us being biased but the angmo missed the point about having basic respect for others and being a courteous human being. His behaviour surely is frowned on even in his home country. It just so happens that this had been caught on video which is bad luck on Mark.

It is the behaviour that should not be tolerated and I am glad the motorist sought out an avenue to share his experience. It is not about locals vs expats but bad behaviour. We should call out bullies.

  55. Let me state that I am a Singapore who has been working overseas for many years. Wherever I am based, I adopt the culture and good habits of the local people knowing that in part, I am upholding the good name of Singapore.

The reaction in this forum to this fellow actions caught on video is NOT Xenophobic nor racist. Whether he is a White, Black, Yellow or Green fellow has no bearing as he did commit (1) a traffic offence (b) acted in a threatening manner and (c) made an obscene gesture.

All this is good enough for him to be prosecuted for the offences committed.

For those who has taken the line in slamming him because he is a foreigner, please do put it in the right context so that we can show all the foreigners that we, Singaporeans, are not Xenophobic nor racist.

Foreigners (of whatever creed or colour) should understand that you are a guest in someone else's home. You should behave with appropriately during your stay with us. We will be a good host as long as you behave like a good guest.

Further, foreigners has to keep in mind that regardless of your position in the commercial sector (Managing Director, General Managers, IT Managers, Construction Workers etc), you are no more than just providing a service in OUR country. You work and you get a salary. The service you provide, hopefully bring about some good to our country. Its a commercial transaction and a social contract. So please do not ask us to "appreciate" you.

Should you not fulfilled both criteria, then we will stop being a good host as you have not fulfilled your intended function.

So to this fellow in the video, you are caught behaving badly and also breaking OUR traffic laws. This is very evident so let's stop the debate as its a no brainer.

If you really work with Piaggio, then I suggest that your bosses take the appropriate action. If they don't then we Singaporeans will obviously come to the conclusion that Piaggio does not take us Singapore seriously even if they want to sell their products to us and make a profit.

What I have said is based purely on logic and I dare say that if a Singaporean acted the same way as this fellow, I would have said the same about him & the company that engages his services.

Now, the (1) Traffic Police - please do your job, (2) Piaggio - if this fellow is a staff of yours, we Singaporeans are waiting for your action / response and (3) to anyone Foreigners or Singaporeans, if you behave in such an inappropriate manner, please do not expect to anyone to take it quietly. If you don't want anyone to pick on you, don't pick on us.

    2. Anonymous- PROUD TO BE A SINGAPOREAN

I totally agree. When any individual resides in a foreign land, he or she should abide by the country's laws and show respect to the locals and uphold the good name of their own country. Otherwise their existence will surely bring not only disgrace to themselves, country and family name but also to HUMANITY.

This foreigner's obscene gesture, aggressive behavior and breaking of traffic law cannot go unpunished or we will be sending a wrong signal to all foreigners living in Singapore that we can be dictated by their "whims & fancies" without giving due respect to the local people, laws and customs here.

I have seen many Singaporeans hiding behind closed doors for fear of antagonising their foreign neighbours who behave loudly, callously and aggressively to fellow locals. For they know that if they were to speak up, not much can be done to improve the situation but instead more trouble will come knocking on their doors.

Why should Singaporeans continue to live in fear in our own homeland and feel like we are but strangers and prisoners in our own land "invaded" by foreigners in every nook and corner of public housing, transport systems, work areas and even recreational places.

We should not continue to stay silent and let the foreigners act in inappropriate manner, hurling abusive language nor insults at our fellow Singaporeans. As long as they choose to work and live here, they must abide by our law and custom and live at peace with and give due respect to all Singaporeans, Otherwise the moment they stop being a good guest, we too can stop playing host and SEND THEM BACK TO THEIR OWN HOMELAND!

More avenues for Singaporeans to speak up, voice out and air their bad experiences they encounter with foreigners should be provided. GREATER REINFORCEMENT and POLICY CHANGES must be provided to condone such callous behavior on the roads, in housing estates, workplaces, and public, recreational places to Protect fellow Singaporeans. Many do not know where and how to seek help when they are hurt or intimidated by foreigners.

      Delete
    3. So foreigners are all to blame?! Singaporeans don't even obey their own road laws! 'living in fear in your own homeland?" Unless I'm missing something, that's got to be a candidate for biggest exaggeration of the year! You must admit that's over the top?

I can tell you that it works both ways. For foreigners who have been wronged by locals, it's virtually impossible to get any interest from the authorities, unless a serious crime has been committed. I know from experience.

I studied hard to pass my drivers test and 'fit in' when I came to Singapore. I'm no saint, but I can tell you that in most of the 'homelands' you speak of, such badly behaved drivers would be slapped with a $200-300 fine or worse.

I completely agree with you that there should be more enforcement. But I think you'd see at least as many Singaporeans getting fined as foreigners. The road problem isn't to do with 'foreigners' as it is to do with decency in general. There's not enough of it.

They are hardworking driving 12 hours shifts but do they have such concentration on road for long hours. Singapore government should help Singapore taxi drivers may be reduce their taxes or reduce car insurance premium or other benefits.

I have spoken to Singapore Taxi drivers most of them are polite they tell how hard they work to raise their family. One driver recently had a child and working 7 days and another aged driver was working hard to send her daughter to college.

I feel that communication is the key here. Singaporeans and foreigners don't communicate with each other. Let’s stop this robotic life in Singapore. Whenever I board a train in MRT, I feel that it has full of robots playing with their gadgets. It’s said to say I have also become robot like all.

All it needs is a smile. Have you ever smiled or started a conversion with a fellow passenger in MRT. Once we communicate all these issues will be gone. Most of the foreigners respect local customs and laws, but there might one or two rotten tomatoes. It is one individual who makes mistakes and he might be from any country.

    Anyways have a nice day.

  73. Concerned about Bad Driving8 May 2014 at 23:10

I'm surprised at how overtly racist some people are in these comments. As a Singapore PR, I sympathise with the motorists, and do not condone 'road rage' even though I admit I have succumbed to it many times. I wish I had not.

It would help if drivers on the roads in Singapore (wherever they are from) would behave better and if the LTA/ Traffic POlice would hand out $100-200 fines for bad behaviour. What bad behaviour, you ask...?

These happened to me in recent months:

    1. Driver intentionally drives her car into mine because she wants to turn left and there's no room to let her in. I sit on my horn to warn her and she stares at me while she scrapes her car across the front of mine. Initially says let's settle privately, then refuses. (Bukit Timah Road - Bodywork required, insurance claim, I do all the work)

    2. Driver distracted by her phone and drink wanders across the lane divider knocks my rear-view mirror. No horn from me. I motion for her to pull over (no rude gestures) which she does and proceeds to be angry with me. (Upper Thomson Road - scratch on mirror, too much work to pursue; grumpy 'sorry', glare, and then storms off)

    3. Taxi cuts across 3 lanes of traffic in front of my car narrowly missing an accident. (Rochor Road - sent video to TP who referred to Cab Company who claim he received a reprimand)

    4. Mercedes pulls away from light and swerves in front of my car. When I sound my horn, he stops in the middle of the main road (no vehicles in front) to try and get me to hit him. (Balestier Road)

    5. Bus blocks a yellow box *entirely* across the intersection between lights so that no vehicles can pass through when their light is green.

That's excluding the regular flouting of the Highway Code by motorcycles dangerously weaving in and out of traffic (INCLUDING LTA OFFICERS!), going between cars; vehicles never using signals and changing lanes suddenly and without warning. No wonder people get upset!

Where are the traffic police? When I reported 1) they said "we are not interested". The insurance company paid in full after I showed them the evidence. Driver couldn't care less and will probably do it again. I also reported 3) and 4) to the traffic police with video footage (I got an HD camera fitted after the first one) and despite phone calls and emails I have heard nothing from them since December.

I think it's fair to say that there is a problem on the roads in Singapore. People do what they want and there are no police around. Why?

Finally, commenters, grow up! The reason people complain about this stuff is because it's NOT KL or Jakarta or Manila. Singapore is a 1st-world country. It has laws (enforced??) and you expect (relatively) wealthy educated drivers to behave better. It's not a personal criticism of Singaporeans, it's a desire to make things better. One strong measure of a society's maturity is its ability to take criticism and make itself stronger. Somebody complains, don't be pathetic - do something! And don't be racist, that's just nasty.
